The Mount Si High School boys tennis team fell in two contests last week.
During play last Monday, Sept. 29, the Wildcats took on Interlake, who won seven of nine matches played.
The two Mount Si victories, the first individual ones all season for the Wildcats, went to senior Stephen Salmon in singles, who made quick work of the Saints’ Quinn Ressler 6-1, 6-1, and the doubles tandem of Mitch Hubner and Tyler Ostby, who took their match over Ressler and John Kim of Interlake 7-5, 6-7 (13-15), 1-0 (10-6). Hubner had a solid effort in singles, falling to Kim 5-7, 3-6, and Alex Bolves also put a scare in his opponent, falling to Jordan Con of the Saints 4-6, 3-6.
Wildcat coach Jim Gibowski said that despite the win, there’s plenty of work that still needs to be done.
“At one time, we were ahead in four of the six single matches, but only finished with one victory,” he said. “We have to improve on maintaining a lead.”
Mount Si was swept last Tuesday, Sept. 30 by Skyline, 9-0. Brian Johnson had the best effort of the day, falling 3-6, 2-6 to Ryan Clark. Otherwise, it was all Skyline, as the Spartans dominated every match.
“I’ve been happy so far with our intensity in the matches, but I thought we lost the fight too early in some of the matches against Skyline,” Gibowski said. “To me, it was the most disappointing effort of the season.”
