Wildcat hopes kept alive

SNOQULAMIE – It was a rather wild finish last Tuesday night in Snoqualmie for the Mount Si boys soccer team as they played the Interlake Saints.

Yosef Yetneberk scored twice and Alex Crabtree added two assists as Mount Si survived a 3-2 win over Interlake that kept the Wildcats in the thick of the playoff race.

The game was marred by a rather bizarre finish. With Mount Si in front 3-0 in the 75th minute, the Saints scored their first goal, then a skirmish erupted in the Mount Si goal area between Interlake players and Wildcat goalie Jeff Lewis. Both Lewis and the Saints player who got mixed up in the altercation received yellow cards. Then, in the 79th minute, Interlake scored again, and another incident flared up, this time between Saints players and Yetneberk who had relieved Lewis in goal when Lewis got his card. Yetneberk received a yellow as well and things were a bit tense until the final whistle sounded. Those cards were not the only ones either: Evan Lloyd of Mount Si and the Saints’ Nick Monico and Mike Olson all received yellow cards earlier in the contest. It was a rather busy night for the referees.

Wildcat coach Darren Brown said it was a strange finish.

“It was very, very bizarre. For 60 minutes tonight we played the level of soccer that we’re capable of playing and we should be playing at each and every game. Those last 20 minutes we had that lapse, and that’s what can happen when we aren’t playing at the level we’re capable of,” Brown said.

Brown did have praise for Crabtree.

“Alex Crabtree was probably our MVP tonight. He played exceptionally well, had two assists, played a real high level and we need that from him,” Brown said.

Freshman Chad Hennig, who has played strong and steady all season long, continued that against Interlake.

“I think I played pretty good. I got a bunch of compliments from the team,” Hennig said.

Mount Si takes care of Issaquah

The Wildcats went to Issaquah Friday on the verge of clinching a postseason berth. Had the Wildcats won, and Sammamish lost or tied at Liberty, Mount Si would have closed the deal on the playoffs. In amazing come-from-behind fashion, the Wildcats took care of their business, 3-2 over the Eagles. Yetneberk scored twice, upping his goal total to 15 on the season. The Patriots were of no help to Mount Si as Liberty failed to tie or beat the Totems. Sammamish won that contest 2-0.

The Wildcats close out the regular season Thursday night on the road at Mercer Island. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The Islanders have already sealed up the Kingco regular season title and as of last Friday, had not lost a league game. Earlier this season, Islanders star Charles Vallieres scored a hat trick in a 4-0 MI win over Mount Si in Snoqualmie.

Should there be a playoff game, it would involve the Wildcats and Newport at a site to be determined on May 17 at 7 p.m. The contest would be winner to state, loser out.
