From the Rough: Web offers new golf tools

I was searching around the Internet the other day and came across a Web site, still in beta, but has many cool functions available now.

I was searching around the Internet the other day and came across a Web site, still in beta, but has many cool functions available now. The site, www.DiabloGolf.com, is a new golf social media site that makes it easier to organize your games and meet new golfers.

There are a few compelling reasons to become a member of the site. First up, one service, TeeVite, lets you post, view, and accept email invitations to golf games. Also, Golf Handicap and Information Network Intergration lets you post online to your GHIN handicap. Google and iPhone apps mean you can post to GHIN from your smartphone.

The service also lets you join men’s and women’s clubs. You can find a club to join in Washington, get a GHIN number, or get a Diablo Handicap for a fee.

The TeeVite is the idea of brothers Patrick and Tom Jentz. Rather than call 20 friends to put together a game, you post it on Diablogolf.com, sort through members and invite them using e-mail, and the list of people who accept and decline shows up online. You can do public or private TeeVites. The TeeVite allows everybody to see who is in, or out, including all the smack talk that comes along with it, similar to an E-Vite. The TeeVite also includes the local weather, course info, and handicaps of the golfers in the match. This allows you to organize with your current friends, or make new ones.

The GHIN integration provides all golfers with a way to see GHIN handicaps for other members. DiabloGolf.com will allow you to purchase, manage, and renew a GHIN or Diablo handicap anywhere in Washington state. You will be able to see any GHIN or Diablo handicaps, last scores posted, where they played, home course and trending. This will allow you to know if someone is a 15 handicap but shot 74 the last five rounds in a row. You can post your handicap on a Google phone or Iphone. The system is set up to allow you to easily manage all handicap needs.

Another great tool is the golf course finder. You can search for courses several different ways and also locate and book hotels if you’re planning a golf trip. The golf course finder is also where you will see any specials the courses are putting on or the TeeVites that have been posted. For me, the golf course finder makes it faster to get a listing of the courses that I want to play, with all the information, like phone numbers, rates, reviews and links to the course websites too. Diablo golf is one of fewer than 10 sites to purchase this complete course information database, and is the most comprehensive course listing pages I’ve seen.

In all, Diablo has a bunch of slick applications for a site still in beta. I can tell right away that the ideas and functionality being put into Diablo Golf is not being done anywhere else. I think that the Facebook-type of connectivity for golfers and courses is going to make organizing my next round much easier.

You might as well embrace this wonderful technology that we have available. It is here to stay. I don’t care what anyone says; today’s day and age is a great time to be alive.

I would also like to thank my high school teachers at Mount Si High School —Carol Lawrence for preaching the importance of the computer and Kim Sales for teaching me how to type!
