The Mount Si Wildcats boys’ basketball team came from behind in incredible fashion Tuesday night against Liberty, outscoring the Patriots 24-9 in the final quarter en route to a 60-54 win in KingCo 3A action at Mount Si High School.

“Totally unbelievable,” said Mount Si coach Garrick Phillips on his team’s comeback. “I don’t even really feel like we won right now because I was so disappointed with how we played most of this game, but our effort, especially in the fourth quarter, was really, really impressive and that’s why we won.”

Jeremy Johnston, coming off a huge 36-point effort against Sammamish in the Wildcats’ previous game, scored 19 to lead all Mount Si scorers.

However, the story for most of the first three quarters was Liberty’s Anthony Schmidt. Schmidt was doing it all for Liberty with a crisp shooting stroke. He even dunked the ball once on a fast break in the third quarter, and finished the game with 28 points.

The Wildcats, though, wouldn’t let Schmidt rule the day. Down 49-38 just a couple minutes into the final quarter, Johnston and Erik Tierney made two key buckets apiece, and aided by a couple of Patriot turnovers and the fouling out of the Patriots’ big man, Mkristo Bruce, the comeback was on.

With 4:09 left in regulation, Logan Ratcliffe was fouled on the game-tying bucket. He hit his free throw and the Wildcats were up 50-49. After the Wildcats finished the 14-0 run, Schmidt hit a huge three-pointer to tie the game for Liberty at 52-52.

Tierney and Hank Kennedy then took over for Mount Si, scoring seven of the last eight points. Schmidt tried to perform some more magic, but missed shots and fouls ended up finishing off the Patriots, much to the delight of a very frenzied Mount Si crowd.

“I told the kids if nothing else, the fans had a good time,” said Phillips. They certainly did.

Tierney finished with 15 points, and Ratcliffe had 14 points. Bruce ended the game with 10 points to support the Patriot effort.

The Wildcats travel to Newport Friday. Mount Si lost to Newport at home earlier in the season.

“They’re [Newport] a real aggressive team that’ll come out and get in your face, and we need to match that intensity,” said Phillips. Newport leads the Sky Division and has in its pocket a win over perennial KingCo powerhouse Mercer Island.
