I guess if you are reading this, you made it through the Dawn of the
New Millennium. Funny, feels just like the old one to me. That’s the trouble
with new years. They aren’t really different from old ones. There ought to
be some sort of change that marks the transition. Like you wake up taller,
or with green hair, or something. Something concrete that really shows it’s
a New Year. Maybe we should grow rings, like trees. 1999 would be a
nice wide ring if I were a tree. A wide ring means a good growing year. I will
not go into the implications of the fact that, although I am not a tree, I think I
am wider.

The computers at the library were all OK, except for the one that
runs our heating system. If you were in the library on Sunday, you may have
noticed we were wearing our coats and sweaters. It was a chilly
57° F when we opened. And that was inside!

I see that Pop’s Country Store has changed their reader board. They
must have sold that 50-pound rabbit. I’m not surprised. Seven dollars and
fifty-nine cents is pretty cheap for that big a bunny!

Just before Christmas, I saw four bears playing cards in QFC’s new
seating area. I checked with Mr. Bear and Bettina, but it wasn’t anyone
they knew. The four looked like they were having a good time, each with his
jug of honey at hand. Could it be that Mr. Bear and his adventures have
inspired other bears to get out more and enjoy life? We’d like to think so. Life is
just too short to hibernate for four or five months.

The First Tuesday Book Club has chosen “All the Pretty Horses”
by Cormac McCarthy for the book they will be reading next. You can pick
up a copy at the library if you would like to join their discussion on Feb. 1.
They are always ready to welcome new members to the group.

there is so much to explore between that road and my own doorstep. _
