We must have all been very good this year, to get this beautiful
weather for Christmas. It’s funny, though, Fall City and Carnation and Issaquah
are all fogged in. We are a little island of clear sky. And wasn’t the full
moon spectacular last week? The Mountain Man said it must have gone
Halogen, it was so bright!

Due to holiday scheduling, I was able to “ride along” one day at
work with the Mountain Man. It was a beautiful day to be out in the woods, and
I will now know where all the places he mentions actually are. It was
an interesting day and I enjoyed it very much.

I was reading the names in the high school Honor Roll listing in
last week’s paper and I was noticing how many of the names belonged to
regular library users. I don’t mean the ones that we only see when a report is
due, but the ones that have been coming in year after year. From story times
to high school research. The ones who take out books on every subject
under the sun just because it sounds interesting. The ones who really READ!
I think this demonstrates the power of reading, don’t you?

This is the time of year when we think back over the blessings of
the past year. I seem to have quite a list. The Mountain man and I both
remain healthy. Both his mother (age 82) and my parents (80 and 77
respectively) are doing as well as, if not better,
than can be expected. All our kids and grandkids are doing fine.
My special blessing this year was two-fold. One was the birth of
those three precious great-grandkids for my parents. The second was at
Thanksgiving; from my parents down, every living member of my immediate
family was together. Four generations for the first time since Grandma
Wilson died in 1969. We can’t manage this very often anymore. We are getting
too scattered.
We were able to buy the fishing lodge in Chinook, something we
have wanted to do for some time. So all in all, I think I will have to put 1999
in my “good year” column. I hope it was the same for all of you.

Now that the holiday is over, I have a use for your Christmas cards.
Send them to St. Jude’s Ranch. The children there make them over into new
“Born Again” cards and sell them to
support programs at this home for abused and abandoned children.
You can send the cards to St. Jude’s Ranch, 100 St. Jude’s
Street, Boulder City, NV 89006-0100. You can use this same address to
order “Born Again” cards from the home. Please send the fronts of the
cards only. This is a wonderful way to recycle your old cards. They can
use other cards as well.

I would like to send out a special get well message to my friend
Joan Colligan. She is at home recuperating from surgery. Not a very nice
Christmas present, but husband Jerry tells me that she came through just fine.
She is going to have a long recovery period, and we already miss her at
work. Joan and I hired in the same week at the library and I can’t imagine
work without her.
