It was another dominating day last Monday, Oct. 20, for the Mount Si boys’ golf team, as they added a district title to their league title trophy won just a week prior.
Mount Si scored 70 points to beat Seattle Prep and several other teams for the league title. Not only did the Wildcats team take the crown, but once again, the Wildcats’ top golfers, Bradley Harrelson and Jack Kelly, finished 1-2 individually, with Harrelson taking the title on the fifth playoff hole after battling Kelly for the final three holes (Seattle Prep’s Blake Snyder was also in the championship playoff but was eliminated on the second playoff hole). Harrelson, Kelly and Snyder all shot rounds of 70, with Harrelson’s round including a hole in one on the seventh hole at the Harbour Pointe Golf Club in Mukilteo, where the tournament was held.
For Harrelson, the hole in one was the third of his career, his second in high school. The junior told the Valley Record that he used a pitching wedge on the par-3, 144 yard hole.
“It just looked perfect all the way,” Harrelson said. Following the big shot, coaches were coming up and congratulating him.
“Effort was great,” Harrelson said. “All the guys were really good. They pushed through the weather and they played hard.”
While conditions were a bit rainy at the course, it was “great to win the district title,” he said.
Kelly was pleased with his efforts in the playoff. “I’m glad we extended it for a while and (Harrelson) earned it with a birdie and that’s all right, I’ll take second place,” Kelly said.
The sophomore’s round was solid. He shot a 33 on the front nine to establish his place in the hunt, while Harrelson had to rally on the back nine to get himself into the championship picture.
At least four Wildcats look to advance to state. In addition to Harrelson and Kelly, Mike Rutledge (76, 10th) and Matt Prewett (79, t-14th) finished in the top 16 and are likely to make state appearances, meaning the Wildcats will be one of the favorites to win it all at state next spring. Luke Dietsch (80, t-17th) and Bryce Karalus (82, t-24th) could also make it in, but their status won’t be known until the state allocations are announced during next spring’s sports season. Sea-King boys golf is a fall sport whose state tournament is played in the spring.
