What are kindergartners thankful for?

A lot, it turns out. Just ask North Bend Elementary teacher Mary-Lee Johnson, whose morning class turned in some surprising thoughts on the season.

Johnson has been teaching the children about Thanksgiving and why Native Americans and pilgrims played a big role during the holiday.

During the Thanksgiving season, the children learned to make festive art projects such as paper turkeys, turkey hats and pictures depicting what they are thankful for.

To celebrate what they have learned, they held a Thanksgiving feast with Andrea Stein’s full-day kindergarten class, Thursday, Nov. 19.

Johnson’s class dressed as pilgrims while Stein’s were Native Americans.

“They’re excited about it,” Johnson said.

Some of the things the children are grateful for are a little off-beat.

“Some, they get it,” she said. “Some don’t, so it’s an introduction” to the holiday.

“I am thankful for my puppy,” wrote kindergartner Preston Taylor.

Tori Taylor, Preston’s mother, was surprised to learn about the dog. The family doesn’t own one, so she wondered exactly whose dog he was thankful for.
