For the last few months I’ve heard and read a lot about the Snoqualmie Valley School District Facilities Task Force. Last week one of their meetings fell at a time and place that worked for me. I was very impressed, both with the amount of work they’ve put into their proposal, as well as their ability to communicate that information with the public. In the final analysis, I also like their recommendations.
Each of the 23 members of the task force has put in more than 100 hours in meetings, as well as many hours of personal research. They have explored each option in depth, having listened to experts and researched various factors: the pros and cons of ninth-grade campuses and junior-high schools, the characteristics of different sizes of high schools, increasing building costs, demographic data for the Valley and King County, the possibility of expansion of current facilities, options for funding, etc.
They have communicated with the public through their Web site (http://sharepoint.snoqualmie.k12.wa.us/ftf), as well as holding public input meetings in March, feedback meetings in June and report presentations in September. The Valley Record has also printed guest editorials by task force members and PTSA groups have been informed of their progress. Surely, each and every person in the Valley has had a chance to hear their ideas, ask questions, make suggestions and get on board with their recommendations.
Building another high school? Well, it wasn’t my first choice, but after listening to their proposals, considering their opinions of the other options and reflecting on what I learned, it seems like a wonderful opportunity for our children.
The Facilities Task Force has worked hard to insure the quality of our schools for the future. Next week is the school board’s public hearing on their recommendations. Why not go and let the school board know you support all of their hard work and their proposal.
