McMINNEVILLE, ORE. _ Betsy Borroff of Snoqualmie spent

January studying in Bolivia through a special study program at Linfield College.

Borroff, a sophomore majoring in mathematics, is the daughter of

Sue and Ed Borroff. She took a course called “The Past in the

Bolivian Present.” The course covered present-day culture, society and politics

of Bolivia and presented a first-hand look at the problems poor nations

struggle with as they cope with modernity and the shifting currents of the

global economy.

Borroff is a 1998 graduate of Mount Si High, a member of

Alpha Lamba Delta Honor Society and is active in theater, the French Club,

Fusion and Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.

Borroff was among 178 students participating in on-site study

programs through Linfield College’s January Term, a four-week period of

concentrated study in which students enroll in one course. There is no

additional tuition charge if the students are

fully enrolled in the fall and spring semesters.

January Term offers students and faculty the opportunity to focus

their time and attention on a single course, either on campus or at off-campus

locations in this country or abroad. The program is designed to help

develop global awareness and insights into major issues of the time as well

as broaden understanding of American society and western culture.

Thirteen courses were offered this year and included international

travel in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. Within the United

States, students also studied in Oregon.
