Who said slugs don’t like marigolds?

A look at Snoqualmie life through the eyes of a local.

Another family pet has been put to sleep. Mom and Dad had to

have their 19-year-old snowshoe Siamese cat put to sleep on June 1. I

honestly don’t think there will ever be another cat like her.

Skittles, also known as Cat Ballou and Sky Queen, loved to fly in

the Cherokee airplane with Mom and Dad. She traveled in the car, liked

to be pushed around the yard in the wheelbarrow, floated around the

pool on a board atop an inner tube, ate shrimp every night, had her own

ramp to get into the house by way of the bathroom window, liked to get

inside a laundry basket and get twirled around in circles, hunted for

and brought snakes into the house, attacked anyone who dared to sit

in Dad’s chair, visited people at the nursing home, liked to be brushed

but wasted no time in letting you know when to stop (and she meant

now!), had a meow that could be heard a mile away, and the bluest eyes you ever

saw. She was definitely a unique cat.

June 21 is officially the first day of summer, so why not celebrate

with a frozen strawberry-banana shake? Combine in a blender 1 c.

orange-banana juice, 1/2 pint fresh strawberries, 1 banana, 3/4 c. strawberry sorbet,

2 c. crushed ice, 1/2 pint frozen strawberry yogurt. Blend until thick

and smooth and pour into four tall glasses. Top each with a scoop of frozen

strawberry yogurt and whipped topping.

Brian and I have got a great vegetable garden going. It’s so much

fun when the seeds first come up or you get your first glimpse of a

tomato. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the deer won’t come in and help

themselves to some fresh salad after all our hard work. We’ve decided that one

of our favorite things to do in the evening after a hard day of yard work is to

put on some music and dance under the moonlight.

Father’s Day has come and gone, but I cherish every moment I have

with my Dad. He is absolutely the greatest. He has always taken time to show

us how to do things and help us work on cars, etc., and is always the best

moral support when we need it. He’s also one of those people that has a way of

making everyone laugh. Our family has spent many a times doing and

laughing about some pretty silly things. I’m very grateful for my parents and

the rest of my family.

I had someone tell me they heard that slugs don’t like marigolds.

Boy, did I get a laugh out of that. Marigolds seems to be their favorite! In

Brian’s and my rock garden flower bed, everything is doing beautifully

except the marigolds, which have turned into little stumps of nothing. I swear a

slug would climb a 50-foot electric fence to get at those flowers.

With lawn mowing and playing with the kids come grass stains.

To remove those pesky grass stains, sponge them first with warm

water, then rub rubbing alcohol into them before washing in warm water.

School is out so be extra careful when driving around the

neighborhood. There are going to be a lot of kids out enjoying summer weather

and they don’t always think to look before darting in the street on their bikes.
