A Washington State Trooper dodged an oncoming car in the nick of time, while attempting to stop the car’s driver on I-90 Wednesday, May 21 near North Bend.

According to reports from the Washington State Patrol, officers responded to reports of an erratic driver, a 39-year-old Issaquah woman, who smashed into a concrete barrier at Eastgate, but continued driving east on the freeway. Fellow drivers reported that the woman was driving oddly, across multiple lanes and up and down in speed.

When officers got behind her, she wouldn’t stop, at times leading them while going 85 miles per hour, at times only 40 or 50 mph.

Her car went off the roadway briefly near the Highway 18 interchange.

As the woman drove through North Bend, an officer was ahead of her and preparing to deploy spike strips when her car crossed lanes and headed right for the rear of his vehicle. He managed to spot the oncoming car and jumped out of the way, as the woman’s Toyota Camry slammed into the back of his car at an estimated 45 mph.

The woman was transported to Overlake Hospital Medical Center.

No citation information was available as of press time, but a State Patrol spokesman told the Valley Record that prescription medicine was found inside the vehicle. Investigators will have to determine whether the drug had anything to do with the erratic driving or the accident.

The woman’s car was in pretty bad shape, the spokesman said. The officer, on the other hand, was very lucky for his sharp senses.
