SNOQUALMIE – It was a great Senior Night last Tuesday at Snoqualmie Ridge as the Mount Si boys soccer team played its final home game of the season at their temporary home and celebrated the accomplishments of their seniors. And it was the seniors who took charge and scored a big win which clinched a postseason berth.

Yosef Yetneberk scored the game’s lone goal and a strong Wildcat defense, led by the stellar efforts of Colin Parsons, led Mount Si to a 1-0 win over Newport that forced a rematch between the two teams in the playoffs.

Yetneberk’s goal came with just seconds left in the first half, and it culminated a flurry of great scoring chances by both sides.

Yetneberk’s goal was, after all of the great chances, scored on an empty net. Yetneberk credited his teammate, Gibson Bardsley, for the goal.

“It’s not my effort. It was [an] open pass, [a] beautiful pass from Gibson,” said Yetneberk. “All I had to do is just kick it into the net.”

Wildcat coach Darren Brown was pleased with Parsons’ effort.

“Colin Parsons is just an awesome player. I love the kid. He’s fast, he’ll go through a wall for me, and that’s what you need in that back position,” Brown said.

Parsons talked about his efforts.

“I was dead tired by the second half, but I just willed myself to go on, as hard as I could,” he said.

Prior to the contest, all of the seniors were honored for their efforts in the Mount Si soccer program. The parents of Parsons, Yetneberk, Jeff Lewis, Evan Lloyd, Peter Olson, Owen Kirshner, Robert Jepson, Alex Crabtree and Jay Hunter were all given flowers, and they and their sons went out to the field and had their pictures taken. Mount Si High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Greg Hart was on hand to emcee the ceremonies.

Brown said his seniors’ contributions this year have been important.

“They’re great. This is just a great group of boys. I love them. They work so hard and I think each and every day I see them improving as a team. Our chemistry is great and that’s half of it,” Brown said.

Mount Si bested by Mercer Island

The Wildcats fell to Mercer Island 2-0 last Thursday on the island, and that loss, combined with Newport’s win over Sammamish, meant Mount Si had to travel to Newport Tuesday for the winner-to-state, loser-out contest. If the Wildcats have won, it will mean another contest at Mercer Island Thursday for the Kingco title and a first -round playoff game at home.
