Hubertus Liere, 85, of Carnation, died at home on Monday, July 13.

Hubertus was born in Fernewerder, Germany on Dec. 1, 1923. He was a World War II soldier on the Russian Front and was wounded twice. He attended Arts and Crafts School in Wuppertal, Germany and completed training in furniture and interior design.

In 1954, he immigrated to the U.S. in pursuit of the “American Dream.” He spent many years in Southern California as a furniture designer and maker. There he met his wife, Mary Anne at the Beverly Hills Christian Science church. Teaching opportunities drew them to Washington state in 1975 with their 5-year-old daughter, Christina. Filled with awe for the beauty of the Snoqualmie Valley, he fulfilled his life’s dream of designing and building his own Fernewerder in Carnation.

Hubertus was a Snoqualmie Valley icon. He taught painting and was involved in Habitat for Humanity and the Carnation Chamber of Commerce. Recently, he had been teaching woodworking to the children in the Parade Homeschool program at Carnation Elementary and headed up a woodworking club at Tolt Middle School. He often drove through Carnation in his old green truck, taking a coffee break at 2 p.m. every day at Starbucks and stopping at the side of the Valley roads, painting red barns and the Cascades, “plein air” style.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Mary Anne; daughter Christina (Keith) Bachman of Redmond; stepdaughter Debbie (Gary) McDowell-McGough of Bellevue. Also missing their beloved Opa are his grandchildren Eric and Garrett Bachman and Meghan and Sarah McDowell-McGough. He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Jennifer McDowell.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, July 26, at at the Sno-Valley Senior Center, 4610 Stephens Avenue, in Carnation. A reception will immediately follow. Please bring a note or letter telling a story of a favorite memory of Hubertus. They will be placed in a book for his grandchildren.
