Mount Si High School is putting on the glitz for Spirit Week and Homecoming, starting Monday, Oct. 17, but the festivities have already started for most of the school, who voted this week on the Homecoming Court to be announced Monday. Then there’s the group of five Associated Student Body (ASB) members, for whom Homecoming has been a main attraction since July.

“It’s a ton of work!” announced ASB Homecoming and Assemblies Committee chairperson Maura Williams Thursday before Spirit Week. “Everybody just kind of works on everything, and we meet every single day,” Williams said, but they are all ready for a memorable Homecoming week at Mount Si High School.

Spirit Week starts Monday with the announcement of the Homecoming Court chosen by each high school class. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors each vote for a prince and princess, and seniors vote for five princes and princesses, plus a jester. The entire school casts votes for the Homecoming King and Queen from the five senior pairs.

Each day of Spirit Week is also a dress-up day. Monday is the self-explanatory PJ Day, and Tuesday is Twin Day, for students to find their twin and dress alike. Wednesday is Animal Day, and students can dress in animal costumes, animal prints, or just wear something that pictures animals. For inspiration, look to Williams, who says “I’m definitely going to be sporting my mythical unicorn shirt that day!”

On Thursday, students are encouraged to Clash Your Clothes. “You’re just supposed to mismatch your clothes, and be as tacky and weird-looking as you can,” Williams explained.

Friday, each class will wear its colors, white for freshmen, grey for sophomores, red for juniors, and, for seniors, black and anything camouflage. The camouflage is a joking tribute to the school’s tradition of being known as hicks.

“Have you ever been to one of the games during a hick out?” Williams asks. “You can’t see us because we’re all in camouflage!”

All joking stops though on Friday night, when the Wildcats football team faces rival Bellevue at 7 p.m. at Mount Si Stadium. The game is expected to be tough, but students are confident Mount Si can pull off the win. During halftime of the game, the Homecoming Royalty will be crowned.

Also during the week, the girls soccer team hosts Juanita at home on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m., the volleyball team has away games Oct. 17 and 19, and tennis and cross-country enter tournament play.

Homecoming week ends Saturday, with a dance from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Mount Si gym. This year’s event will feature a Vegas-style magician, in keeping with the theme. Tickets are $18.

Williams and her committee, Jeremy Knight, Katie Huerta, Meg Krianec, and Lexi Swanson, are hoping to have 1,000 people at the dance.
