Shayne Allen and Amanda Beekman, upcoming seniors, at Mount Si High School, were among 1,500 student council leaders and student activity advisers to attend the 74th Annual National Association of Student Councils National Conference.

Allen and Beekman traveled the conference, held June 26 to 29 at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana. The event offers leadership training at its conferences, focusing on turning student leaders into lifelong leaders.

Allen and Beekman received training in basic and advanced leadership, communication skills, service, and diversity. They took part in discussions on issues relevant to today’s youth as well as opportunities to network with student leaders from across the country.

Delegates take part in a community service project, mentoring to local Boys and Girls Club youth, participate in college panels and a college fair at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis an urban campus in downtown Indianapolis.

“Student leadership is the catalyst that enables students to be actively engaged in their own academic and civic education. In that sense, student leaders like Shayne and Amanda truly represent the future of our country” said NASSP Senior Director for Student Programs, Dr. Rosa Aronson, the Senior Director for Student Programs with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, which hosts the sessions.

“This conference will help prepare them for their important roles as active citizens, advocates, and volunteers in their schools, communities and beyond. We applaud Mr. (Randy) Taylor, principal of Mount Si High School for offering this valuable opportunity.

At Mount Si, Amanda will be ASB President; Shayne will be the head of the Homecoming and Assemblies committee. Both students will be involved in several service projects.
