Snoqualmie boy gets piano honor

Snoqualmie student Isaac Mullins, 11, achieved honorable mention at the 2008 Central Washington University Piano Sonata-Sonatina Festival competition, held Saturday, Oct. 25 in Ellensburg.

He performed Sonatina in C major, Opus 55, No. 1, Movement 1, Allegro, by Fredrich Kulah. This is the second consecutive year Isaac was honored at this competition of over 400 students from the state. He is in the sixth year of piano study with Snoqualmie pianist Bob Pajer.

Isaac attends sixth grade at Snoqualmie Middle School, where he enjoys all of his honors classes. One of his favorite classes is band with Mr. Snavely, where he plays drums. Isaac’s favorite sport is baseball. He is a left-handed pitcher and first baseman, a particularly dangerous combination for competing teams. He enjoys debating as well as baseball, and aspires to become a lawyer or major league baseball pitcher.

finishes training

Private First Class Zachary Michael Vaughn, 21, of North Bend, graduated from United States Marine Corps boot camp, Friday, Nov. 21 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

Vaughn successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD San Diego as one of 83 recruits in Training Platoon 1068. While in basic training, Vaughn was promoted to platoon leader. Following 45 days of home leave, he will report to Camp Pendleton for one month at Military Combat Training, then Military Occupation Specialty school.

Vaughn will be stationed in Texas following training.

Rotary offers grant funding

The Rotary Club of Snoqualmie Valley is looking to fund several service projects that are needed by non-profit organizations in the Snoqualmie Valley.

To receive funds, which may range from $500 to $5,000, non-profit groups may submit a plan and a project description, with costs broken down by materials and installation, by Dec. 31. The project must be completed by June 1, 2009, and the club asks that there be a place for the Rotary logo on the finished project.

to aid Encompass

Tickets to Sip of Snoqualmie are $50 apiece, with VIP tickets priced at $150. All proceeds will go to Encompass. Early ticket purchases are advised, as the event is expected to sell out.

The Dahlia Barn in North Bend is holding a special holiday barn sale through mid-December.

The business offers wreaths, centerpieces, an option to ‘Build-Your-Own-Wreath,’ custom wreaths, candles, handmade soaps, handmade Christmas cards, flower presses, and more. All items are handmade. Dahlia Barn also has fresh-cut Christmas trees.

The business offers handmade items by five local artists, including Annette Craig, who is well-known around the Valley for Christmas wreaths and decor. Dahlia Barn also offers many dried flower arrangements.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
