Bad weather was a big issue for Mount Si baseball last week, with one game moved and another postponed.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play Mercer Island Wednesday, March 26, at Island Crest Park. Weather and poor field conditions first postponed the game to Thursday, March 27, but when conditions at the park did not improve, the game was shifted to Mount Si, making it the Wildcats’ home opener for the 2008 season, and the first home game for new coach Chaz Carr.

Any excitement about that occasion quickly went away, though, as the Islanders took a quick early lead, then used a big blast from one of their top players to score a decisive victory.

Senior outfielder Sean Perryman’s three-run home run in the third inning broke the game open, and despite a late comeback by the Wildcats, the Islanders cruised to an 8-3 win.

“Mercer Island out hit us today a little bit,” said a disappointed coach Carr, still looking for his first win as Mount Si head man. “They didn’t hit the ball too hard; their balls just found holes.”

“We didn’t really play that bad,” Carr said, noting that the team “kind of went through the motions.”

“We’ve just got to dig a little deeper and come out with a little bit more emotion,” he said.

Zach Robinson had a very strong day for the Wildcats; he went 3-3 with a pair of runs batted in.

“Good day,” Robinson said. “I came ready to play.”

Taylor Campbell continued his strong start to the season, adding a double to the cause for Mount Si.

Mount Si was trailing 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh when they mounted their rally. Ian Brown and Jake Handy each scored runs, but it was not enough in the end.

The game scheduled for Friday, March 28, at home against defending state champion Issaquah was postponed due to the wintry conditions, which affected the Valley and other areas around the Eastside. It was scheduled to be made up this week, which also included Mount Si’s first game against their former coach as the Wildcats traveled to Sammamish. Gary McGregor, the former Wildcat head coach, is assisting the Totems this season. Mount Si visits Bellevue Thursday, April 3, then are home Friday, April 4, for a date with a tough Newport team. First pitch for both games is 4 p.m.
