Someone accuses someone else of doing something wrong. It happens every day and unfortunately or fortunately, depending on which end of the accusations you are on, it can lead to charges being filed by a prosecutor or other legal body. This was the case with a local chiropractor and our decision to run the story, we felt, was a good one based on those charges.
It’s not an easy situation in a small community when someone gets charged with a crime or wrongdoing. Most fly under the radar but when it comes to someone in a professional services business such as lawyers or doctors, the state sends us press releases of those being investigated or charged. When a local chiropractor was shown on that list, we knew we had to cover it whether we agreed with the charges or not.
We have a responsibility to provide all the news whether some people don’t want to hear it or not. We try hard to provide an unbiased story and to get all view points. In this case we made an extra effort to get the chiropractor’s side of the story, as well.
Our responsibility does not end there. We will continue to follow this story until its conclusion; whether charges are dropped, the chiropractor is exonerated or even convicted.
I would also urge supporters or detractors of the story to write a letter to the editor and share your views. Freedom of speech is key to our democracy and discussion about such a topic can be a good thing.
