Wildcat soccer camp to be held this summer
The Mount Si High School soccer organization will be holding a summer camp for aspiring young athletes.
The fourth annual Wildcat Attack Camp will have two sessions campers can choose from. The sessions run four days each, from June 30 to July 3, and July 7 to 10. Both sessions are Monday through Thursday, and held in the mornings between 9 and 11:30 a.m. at Snoqualmie Middle School. The camps are aimed at boys and girls ages 5 to 13.
Each camp costs $100, and includes a T-shirt. Equipment will be provided, but campers are asked to bring their own water and snacks.
Campers will learn skills to be successful in both Wildcat soccer program and in club soccer at the high school level. The camp is run by Mount Si High School coach Darren Brown. Brown has led his boys’ and girls’ teams at Mount Si to a number of play-off appearances over the past few years as coach, and also led Westview High School’s (Beaverton) boys team to the Oregon state high school playoffs twice. In addition to his high school coaching, Brown also coaches Snoqualmie Middle School’s girls’ team, who won their second straight league championship this spring. Brown will be assisted by current and ex-Wildcat players who have found homes in college soccer, a list that is growing.

Hepner nominated for all-star team
Mount Si High School senior and baseball player Blake Hepner has been nominated to play in this year’s KingCo All-Star team.
Hepner has been Mount Si’s starting catcher for the last three seasons. He was also awarded 3A Kingco honorable mention status for the last two seasons. Hepner plans to attend Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake this fall. Big Bend has a competitive baseball program and Moses Lake hosts some of the state’s best fishing and hunting, Hepner’s other loves.
Valley gymnast places second at state meet
Abby Webber of Snoqualmie placed second in the “Junior B” age group at the USAG Level 4 Washington State Gymnastics Meet, held Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27, at Bellevue. Her coach is Liana Barbura.
Golf tourney planned at Mount Si
The Mount Si Wildcats Fastbreak Club presents the first annual Golf Tournament at Mount Si Golf Course, planned for Aug. 15. Sponsor and entry forms for the event can be found at www.mtsiwildcats.com/Fastbreak-Club-Golf-Form.doc. Potential players are asked to respond early so that organizers can start anticipating a golfer count. Hole sponsors are also needed.
SMS athletes grab medals off Maywood
Snoqualmie Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade girls track teams found themselves outnumbered by the Maywood team in their recent contest at the Mount Si stadium.
But Angela Hontas and Lexi Swanson led the team with first place wins. Hontas ran her personal best in the 800 meter race, and took tenth with a time of 2:49. Swanson took the high jump with a leap of four feet, two inches.
Second places were captured by Landon Edwards in the hurdles, Sophie Rockow in the 100 meter race and Analise Sansburn in the 200 meter race.
Thirds came from Kailey Vanslyke in the discus, Katy Crowley in the high jump, Rockow in the long jump, Edwards in the 1,600 meter race and Swanson in the hurdles.
In the seventh grade meet, taking the lone first was Sierra Morin in the long jump with a new personal record of 13 feet. Placing second were Molly McElroy in the 100 meter race, Meghan McCallum in the 800 meter race, Kassandra Teran in the discus and Morin in the hurdles. Morin also took a third in the 200 meter race.
Thrilling events for Chief Kanim track
The Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks track team hosted rival middle school Snoqualmie Eagles on Thursday, May 8.
This being only the second track meet for both schools, competition was thrilling and exciting. When final scores were tallied, Chief Kanim and Snoqualmie both found alternating wins.
Though the sixth grade CKMS girls were defeated by SMS, fans witnessed strong performances from several Hawk athletes, including Sophia Rouches, winning the 75 meter hurdles in 15.3 seconds, placing second in the 800 meter run in 3.09 minutes and earning third in the 200 meter dash in 32.4 seconds. Laurel McGlaughlin also ran well for CKMS, winning both the 100 meter dash in 14.6 seconds and the 200 meter dash in 32.4 seconds.
The CKMS sixth grade boys handily defeated their rival SMS team. Chief Kanim swept several events, including the 75 meter hurdles, in which Reid Malmquist took first place, Sebastian Elguea second and Bailey Tackas third; the 100 meter dash, in which Chris Sellars took first, Chris Lein second and Bailey Tackas third place; and the discus, in which Josiah Macy took first place, Austin Borgestrom second and Reid Malmquist took third place.
A fierce girls’ seventh grade Hawks team also found themselves on top, beating the seventh grade girls’ Eagle team.
The Hawks were led by Celena Wassinck’s first place in the long jump with 12 feet, nine inches and second place in both the 200 meter dash in 32.7 seconds and 100 meter dash in 15 seconds. Ashley Jackson showed off her speed by winning both the 100 meter dash in 14.9 seconds and the 200 meter dash in 30.7 seconds. Other first place winners were Lexi Johnson in the 75 meter hurdles in 14.5 seconds; Cassie Harvey in the 1,600 meter run with 6:09 minutes; Haley White in the 400 meter dash with 1.16.5 minutes; Ronnie Wassinck in the 800 meter run with 2.58.7 minutes; Katie Huerta in discus with 43 feet, three inches; and Katlyn Moriarty in shot put with a 23 foot, three inch throw.
The seventh grade CKMS boys’ team swept multiple events including the 75 meter hurdles, 1,600 meter run, 100 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, long jump and high jump. Alex Censullo and Devin Sharps were neck and neck in the 1,600 meter run, but Censullo pulled out the race, winning with a time of 5:28. Sharps came back in the 800 meter run, though, beating Censullo with a time of 2.33.2 minutes. Cole Palmer faired strong with first place finishes in both the 100 meter dash in 13.3 seconds, 400 meter dash in 1.01.5 minutes, and shot put with 29’ feet, 7 1/2 inches. Rounding out the competition, Cameron VanWinkle won the 200 meter dash in 28.1 seconds and the high jump with 4 feet, 10 inches.
At the eighth grade level, Elijah Mayfield ran away with the only Chief Kanim first place of the night, winning the 75 meter hurdles in 13.9 seconds. Ryan Bristle earned two second places in the 100 meter dash, with 14.7 seconds, and the long jump with 11 feet.
Finishing the meet strongly, the Hawks’ eighth grade girls team defeated their rival Eagles, spreading first place wins evenly among team members. Several eighth grade girls placed first in their events: Kenzie Parker in hurdles with 14.5 seconds; Kendall Maddux in the 1,600 meter run in 6.07 minutes; Jordan Palmer in the 800 meter run with 2.35 minutes; Rebecca Rowe in the shot put with 24 feet, three inches; Lena Wooldridge in the long jump with 11 feet, three inches; and Ramie Kraun in the high jump with 4 feet, six inches.
