Mount Si Fish and Game Club’s Annual Children’s Trout Derby is Saturday, May 2, at the ponds located behind the Snoqualmie Police Department, 34825 Douglas Ave. S.E., on Snoqualmie Ridge.

The derby will go from daybreak to 10 a.m. No registration is necessary, and participation is free. Fish weigh-in is scheduled for between 6:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Children ages 6 to 14 may compete.

For this year’s derby, members are planting 350 trout at the Snoqualmie police station pond.

The group’s derby started more than 50 years ago. Since then, generations of Valley children have honed their fishing skills on local lakes.

Club members enjoy seeing the happy, excited faces of children during the derby, and volunteer their time to help carry on the fishing tradition, said Shawn Hamerly, Fish and Game Club member.

“We try to provide a place for local kids to fish,” she said.

Fish and Game Club members used to plant fish at a Kimball Creek pond until 2002, when the derby was moved to the police station. That pond is less overgrown, allowing for easier access by families.

Fish must be neatly cleaned and have gills removed before being weighed. There is a limit of two fish, and fishing nets are not allowed. Prizes will be given out at 10 a.m. for the largest fish in each age bracket. For more information, call Hamerly at (425) 888-4605.
