For the second year in a row, the Mount Si gymnastics team finished fourth as a team at the state 3A finals, held Friday, Feb. 19, in Tacoma.

The Wildcats scored a 164.35 to grab the fourth place spot. Auburn Mountainview won the state crown, followed by Columbia River from Vancouver, and SeaKing runner-up Holy Names.

Wildcat senior Georgia Reynolds, in her final weekend of high school competition, finished second in the all-around with a 37.225. Reynolds took second in the bars (9.275), tied for fifth on the beam (9.3), took 13th in the floor (9.3), and finished seventh in the vault (9.35).

Two areas where Mount Si struggled were the vault and floor. The Wildcats as a team had the sixth-best vault score (42.0) and fifth best floor score (42.475). On the floor, senior Rachel Karavias received a 7.425, slightly more than two points deducted from her start value score of 9.525. Part of the reason for the struggles on floor was that the music that the Wildcats normally use for the routines was left behind at the hotel by mistake and not used in the meet.

Vault also was a tough spot for the Wildcats, with slightly lower scores by Karavias (8.4) and Richmond (8.375) hurting the overall cause; both gymnasts’ scores were over a point below their start values. Freshman Jessica Trotto had a nice score in this event, an 8.1.

Mount Si continued to shine in individual competitions last Saturday, Feb. 20. Reynolds won the state 3A individual title in the bars, scoring a 9.25. The senior also tied for seventh on the vault (9.275, with Nathan Hale’s Naivasha Sophusson-Smith), tied for 11th in the floor (9.375, shared with Auburn Mountainview’s Natalie Hostetter), and took 13th in the beam (8.85). Richmond grabbed a tie for fourth on floor with Christy Grorud from Spokane’s North Central; both girls scored 9.6 on their routines. The Wildcat junior also tied for eighth on the beam (9.2, tie with Tori Franzen of Bellingham’s Squalicum) and finished 16th on the bars (7.475).
