Helping homeless youth in emergency weather conditions is topic of next Homeless Youth forum, Jan. 18 at Sallal Grange

The next Forum on Homeless Teens in Snoqualmie Valley will be 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19 at the Sallal Grange, 12912 432nd Ave. S.E., North Bend.

In the event of a severe weather emergency there is no shelter in Snoqualmie Valley that can take in unaccompanied kids under 18. The closest facility is Youth Haven, operated by Friends of Youth in Kirkland, which can accommodate only 12 guests. Children experiencing homelessness are often turned away from shelters in King County, due to a lack of capacity at licensed facilities or strict laws. The forum will discuss these and related problems.

Representatives from the Mockingbird Society and Friends of Youth will share their perspectives on what can be done about sheltering youth in emergency weather.

The Mockingbird Society is an organization that transforms homeless teens into Youth Advocates who go to Olympia to meet with lawmakers to help change laws that hurt rather than help.
