An early-morning break-in on Snoqualmie Ridge Sunday was probably a case of mistaken identity, Snoqualmie Police believe.
An unknown juvenile, dressed in black, broke into a townhome on the 8000 block of SE Douglas Street at about 4:40 a.m., woke the residents, asked for food, then fled without taking anything.
“We think it was not at all a planned event,” said Snoqualmie Police Capt. Nick Almquist. “This was more an intoxicated… younger person who went to the house that they thought was theirs.”
Almquist said it appeared the suspect had been looking for a spare key and had searched furnishings outside the home, then decided to break in.
Next, the suspect likely went up the stairs to wake the occupants, looking for food.
“He probably then realized, ‘oh, that’s not Mom and Dad, this isn’t my house,’” Almquist said. “Nothing was taken and there was plenty for them to take.”
Police investigating the incident Sunday morning went door to door to speak to neighbors and brought in a search dog, but no one had seen the person and the dog gave no clear indication as to where the subject went next. They also attempted to locate security video that might show the intruder, but none was available.
“Since it was so close to the station, we were there within a minute of the call,” Almquist said. “We had kind of saturated the area within a minute with officers.”
Now, police have exhausted most of their leads.
The suspected scenario, that someone under the influence mistakenly thought he was at his own home, does happen occasionally, but not often, Almquist said.
