Girls golf falls twice
The Mount Si High School girls golf team fell to the Skyline Spartans 239-267 on Monday, March 31.
Katie Somers, Mount Si’s senior standout, won medalist honors, shooting a round of 37. Jen Sanford paced the Wildcats with a round of 47. Skyline was led by the 44 of Meaghan Madgett, and was aided by a good round of 47 from Emily Baldwin. Skyline had four players with decent rounds in the 40s and Mount Si had four players struggle with rounds in the 60s; that was what decided the contest.
The Wildcats lost to the Bellevue Wolverines Thursday, April 3, 238-251. Somers again took home medalist honors, carding an even round of 36 on the par 36 Mount Si Golf Course layout. Sanford paced things for Mount Si with a 47. Catelyn Webber shot a 42 to lead Bellevue, while Vikka Stukas carded a 46 to aid the Wolverine cause. Again, the Wildcats struggled somewhat, with three rounds in the 60s. Bellevue did not have any rounds above 55, and that proved to be the difference.
Boys defeat Newport
The Mount Si High School boys track team traveled to Newport last week and came away with a 75-68 win.
Frank McLaughlin had a stellar night, winning both the 100, 200 and 400 meter races. He ran an 11.1, a personal best, in the 100, a 22.3 in the 200, and a 50.9 in the 400. McLaughlin also anchored the winning 4X400 relay team along with Colin Alexander, Drake da Ponte and Owen Strom. They finished in a blistering 3:36.9.
In the 1,600 meter, da Ponte won in a time of 4:36.8. He also won the 3,200 meter in a time of 10:15. Teammate Colin Van Slyke won the 110 high hurdles in a time of 18.4 seconds, and took third in the 300 hurdles in a time of 46 seconds. In the throwing events, Josh Davis won the shot with a throw of 47 feet, 11 inches. He also won the discus with a throw of 159 feet, five inches. Kyle Stevens won the javelin with a throw of 155 feet, one inch.
In the pole vault, Brandon Roddewig won, clearing 12 feet, six inches.
Several Wildcats placed second in their events. Alexander took second in the 400 meter, as well as in the 800 meter. Strom took second in the 1,600 meter. Max McDevitt took second in the 3,200 meter. Jake Tweten notched second-place finishes in the shot, discus and javelin.
Strom also placed third in the 800 meter, and McDevitt placed third in the 1,600 meter. Van Slyke placed third in the 300 hurdles, Carter Howell placed third in the shot, Ryan Ransavage placed third in the discus and Roddewig placed third in the high jump. Zac Pearlstein placed third in the triple jump.
Girls fall to Knights
Despite several impressive performances, the Mount Si High School girls’ track team lost to Newport last week, 61-89.
Katie Woolsley had a great day, winning the 400 meter in a time of 61.9 seconds. She also placed second in the javelin with a throw of 92 feet, eight inches. Diane Keller won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.6 seconds and also helped the team of Kayla McLain, Natalie Opsvig and Lauren Snead win the 4X200 relay in a time of 1:52. Snead also won the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 53.2 seconds. McLain also placed third in the 200 meter.
In the throwing events, Mount Si dominated. Katelyn Walker won the shot with a throw of 32 feet, six inches. Summer Nash won the discus with a toss of 104 feet, 11 inches. She also placed second in the high jump.
In the high jump, Stephanie Burk won, clearing four feet, 10 inches, and Symone Shaw won the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 8.25 inches. Shaw also placed third in the triple jump.
Other placers were Helen Hasbun, who took second in the 100 meter, Mercedes Nwokeuku who took third in the 100 meter, Taylor Robbins who placed second in the 400 meter, Megan Past who placed second in the 800 meter, Alex Rudd who placed second in the 3200 meter, Alisha Larion who placed second in the shot and third in the javelin, Molly Meyers who placed third in the shot, Corina Linder who placed third in the discus, and Kelly Besmer who placed fourth in the pole vault.
JV tennis ties
The Mount Si High School girls junior varsity tennis team ended their recent match with Liberty in a 6-6 tie. Singles winners were Christina Finley, Shelby Thomas and Bethany Freeler. Doubles winners were the teams of Summer Nikolasen/Bailey Barnard, Evelyn Sisk/Jodie Magnuson and Elly Van Hyning/Erin Reeh.
Impressive outing for tennis
Despite losing to a strong Skyline team, the Mount Si High School tennis girls JV tean had several strong performances. Kaitlyn Usselman, after being down 0-5, came back to win 9-7 in singles play. Jodie Magnuson also won her match 8-1. The teams of Kaitlyn McCauley/Lindsey Masters and Amanda Gates/Bailey Barnard won in doubles action.
