North Bend completes full renovation of NE 12th Street

North Bend has completed a long time priority project, the improvement of NE 12th Street.

The city of North Bend held a ribbon cutting for the completion of a longtime priority project for the city, the complete improvement of Northeast 12th Street.

Representatives from the city of North Bend gathered at the Nursery at Mount Si to celebrate the completion of the project. Mayor Ken Hearing thanked the people who live and work in the area for being patient with the city regarding construction impacts over the past few months.

According to public works director Mark Rigos, the project had been identified as a priority in 2014. The road had been notoriously bumpy and unsafe, with a small travel lane that had drivers moving toward the middle of the road to avoid potholes. Rigos said the city council moved the project up in the six year transportation improvement plan.

The project to fix the road and improve safety also gave the city a chance to address other projects along that road. Deputy public works director Tom Mohr, one of the project leads, said the work consisted of replacing 3,000 feet of water main, reconstructing the roadway for 3,000 feet, adding three feet of shoulder on both sides, and replacing three of the floodway culverts along the stretch of the road.

The low bid for the project, Mohr said, was $1.45 million. Construction began in the summer and finished in late October, just the week before the ribbon cutting.

Both Mohr and Rigos were glad that the project was complete, on time, on schedule, and on budget, and that a city road has been made considerably safer for the citizens.
