A Snoqualmie child was found hours after being abducted by her mother on Sunday.

The 3-year-old boy was abducted by his mother at 4:15 p.m. Dec. 27, according to the Snoqualmie Police Department. The boy and his father arrived at the Panorama apartment complex when the mother abducted the child. She jumped into a waiting vehicle and sped off. The vehicle was believed to have been driven by a man who had felony charges pending for threatening the mother and the child, a police press release said.

The father shot one round at the vehicle with his child inside as it was fleeing, apparently in an attempt to disable the vehicle, the press release said. The mother was prohibited from seeing her child and the father by a court order. An AMBER Alert was issued in the area around 8 p.m.

The mother and child were found just before 10 p.m. Dec. 27 at the Rock Creek Sports facility in Ravensdale, where the mother worked, said Capt. Nick Almquist, public information officer for the Snoqualmie Police Department. The mother’s cell phone was pinged and located at the facility.

The child and mother were found safe, and the mother was taken into custody, Almquist said. The father’s firearm was also seized by police. Detectives are working to determine potential charges for those involved.

Child Protective Services took custody of the child and released him to his grandfather, Almquist said.

Detectives from the Snoqualmie Police Department worked with the Major Crimes Task Force, Washington State Patrol, King County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI to locate the child.

AMBER Alerts were developed as an early warning system to help find abducted children. As of May 2020, 988 children had been rescued specifically because of AMBER Alerts since the program began, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
