A mechanical issue is preventing the North Bend City Hall flag from being lowered to half-staff, in accordance with an order from President Joe Biden.

American flags were ordered to be lowered to half-staff following an attack on the U.S. Capitol grounds on April 2, which took the life of a police officer. However, the flagpole at North Bend’s City Hall is experiencing mechanical issues that prevent the crank from lowering the flag.

“The city is working on a repair, but it will most likely to be an immediate or easy problem to fix,” an April 5 press release from the city states. “The city regrets that it could not lower the flag to half-staff to honor the fallen police officer, and offers heartfelt condolences to all impacted by this tragedy at the U.S. Capitol grounds in Washington, D.C.”

The White House advised that the flag be flown at half-staff until sunset on April 6, 2021.

On April 2, a driver rammed his vehicle into a barrier surrounding the Capitol, wounding one officer, and killing Officer William Evans, an 18-year veteran of the department. Police shot and killed the suspect as he ran toward officers with a knife, The Hill reports. The suspect was identified as Noah Green, a 25-year-old man from Indiana.

The attack came three months after a mob stormed the Capitol Building on Jan. 6 in an attempt to disrupt the Electoral College from certifying the presidential election for Joe Biden.
