It was a slow start, but once Mount Si’s bats started swinging, the boys baseball match Friday, May 8, against Sammamish really heated up.

Led by two hits and four RBIs by freshman Trevor Lane, Mount Si’s offense made easy work of the Totems, 10-2. The team hammered three home runs in the game. The victory ensured that the Wildcats will finish at least third in league.

Mount Si has a chance at second and a first-round bye in the playoffs, depending on Bellevue’s result with Juanita, which was not available by the Valley Record’s deadline.

Sammamish scored twice in the first to take the lead, with pitcher Ross Kulcyzk in control. He made it into the fourth inning without giving up a hit, when the Wildcats erupted. First, Tim Proudfoot doubled, then Taylor Campbell singled. A delayed double steal allowed Proudfoot to score from third to put the Wildcats on the board. Then Lane stepped up, and hit his first varsity home run in high school ball, a 400-foot-plus blast over the center field fence. The homer put the Wildcats up 4-2, and they stayed in the lead.

“When [Lane] does the right thing and stays within himself, he can hit the ball a long ways. He proved that today,” said Mount Si coach Chaz Carr.

The Wildcat boys needed to be selective, swinging at good pitches while they were ahead in the count, Carr said.

Mount Si added more points in the fifth inning. Matt Bankston singled, then Proudfoot tripled to score Bankston. With Proudfoot on third, Campbell homered to left to make it 7-2 Cats.

“I didn’t think it was going to be out at first,” a surprised Campbell said. “I thought it was just a hard hit ball.”

Lane later added a single which scored Danny Cavanaugh, who himself doubled to drive in another run. Rossco Castagno capped things off with a homer of his own in the sixth. Frankie Tassara took the win in relief of Alex Hiebert.

The Wildcats play in this week’s Kingco Tournament at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.

“We’re going to play very hard, and we’re going to be locked in from the beginning,” he said. “We look to bring home a championship.”
