Twede’s Cafe returned the iconic Double R, featured in the cult-classic TV show “Twin Peaks,” to its outdoor sign last week.

With a crowd standing in the diner’s parking lot — and additional spectators watching from across the street — owners Rachel Bennett and Max Spears unveiled the red neon for the first time during a lighting ceremony Aug. 28.

A two-piece band played on the sidewalk at the corner of North Bend Way and Bendigo Boulevard, as the RR neon illuminated the night sky in North Bend to the sound of cheers from the crowd.

Twede’s Cafe has been in North Bend under various names and owners since the 1940s, but is best known as the Double R Diner, its fictional counterpart in the 1990s “Twin Peaks” TV series.

Twede’s, then known as Mar-T Cafe, had its exterior featured in the show’s pilot episode, where it was outfitted with the Double R sign. Twede’s was again transformed into the Double R Diner in 2015 during a series reboot.

Bennett and Spears, who purchased the diner in 2020, said they had always dreamed of bringing back the Double R. They launched a Kickstarter campaign for the project in April and, with the support of indomitable “Twin Peaks” fans, raised over $29,000.

In a speech thanking those who donated to the project, Bennett said they had come together because of a shared love for the magic of “Twin Peaks” and “our little town that keeps the magic alive.”

“Tonight is a testament to the power of community, the strength of our shared love for ‘Twin Peaks’ and the determination of everyone who believed in this dream,” she said. “Because of you this neon has a permanent place right where it belongs at the Double R Diner — forever.”
