The Mount Si gymnastics team finished its season Thursday night in strong fashion, taking care of Bellevue and Interlake in a KingCo 3A meet at Mount Si High School.

Final scores were: Mount Si 150.5, Bellevue 146.05, and Interlake 139.85.

Mount Si coach Renee Tredo was very happy about the strong finish.

“We’re quite excited with our results. We were hoping to take this meet and we did, so we have three wins on the year,” Tredo said.

Piper Sherbon led the way for the Wildcats, winning all-around honors with a score of 33.9 and finishing atop three of the four different events. The only one she didn’t win was the balance beam, where she placed second.

Sherbon credited fan support for part of her success.

“They help me out a lot. They cheer me on, and it just makes me feel really good about myself, and so I get all confident. I always do really good,” she said.

Lauren Paulus and Kayla Jayne also had good showings for Mount Si. Paulus finished third in the all-around with a score of 30.9, and placed in every event. Jayne finished sixth in all-around with a score of 29.1, and placed on the vault and floor exercise.

Beth Porterfield was the top gymnast for Bellevue, finishing second in the all-around. Interlake’s night didn’t go well, but the team did place in all the events.

Tredo believes this year went well for her gymnastics team.

“I think we’ve had a very successful year this year. We have beat our school records in everything – every event, we have people holding school records.

“We have our team score this year and the team has beat it twice,” she continued. “Tonight we didn’t beat it; we’re two points short of our school record, but we scored 150 twice in a row, which is a huge feat for us. We were barely getting to 140-plus, so reaching 150 was a great win for us. I think this year’s team was definitely strong and very motivated and worked really well.”

Both Tredo and Sherbon are looking forward to the postseason.

“Right now, we’re looking at league, which is coming up on Feb. 2,” Tredo said. “From league, we have probably three or four girls that we’re looking at to qualify for districts; and at districts, we’re hoping we’ll get at least two to state, which is the following weekend.”

Sherbon is hoping for success, but recognized the challenge ahead.

“[At] league, hopefully I’ll place on something … I placed second in league last year, so hopefully this year, I’ll place at league,” she said. “But this league is a lot better [than last year].”

As for the future, Tredo thinks the building of the three-year-old Mount Si gymnastics program will continue.

“Next year, we have a real young team. Most of the girls should be returning, so we should have a stronger team next year than we have right now, and of course, the new incoming freshmen, also,” she said.
