Bboys track team shows strength

With a relatively thin team for the first track meet of the season, both the seventh- and eighth-grade boys teams fell to Issaquah with scores of 58 to 45, and 54 to 41, respectively. Although the Eagles were few in number, they were not short on talent. On the eighth-grade side, Jason Alexander won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.2 seconds and led the 400-meter and 800-meter relays to victory. In the field events, Cody Graham cut the field up in the high jump with a scissor jump of 4 feet, 8 inches. The Eagles dominated both throwing events by taking five of the six places with Dominic Catanzaro winning the discus and Ryan Ransavage outthrowing the field in the shot.

The seventh-grade squad had several outstanding performances as well. In the sprints, Collin VanSlyke won the 200-meter dash in 28.9 seconds and anchored the 400 relay team as it crossed the tape in first with a time of 53.4 seconds. Long-legged Calvin Mahan outran the rest of the field in the 400-meter dash in 68.3 seconds. In the field events, Cameron Hilsman edged out the competition in the discus by eight inches with a throw of 66 feet, 8 inches.

The Eagles will have a full squad as they face the Hawks of Chief Kanim on May 12 at Chief Kanim.


Eagles track team debuts

The Snoqualmie Middle School track team had their first contest of the season recently against Issaquah and Chief Kanim middle schools.

The seventh- and eighth-grade girls team fared well during their debut facing Issaquah Middle School. Despite finishing second overall and having no track of their own to practice on this season, a number of individuals broke into the SMS “All-Time” track and field records. Leading the way for the seventh-grade team was Summer Nash, taking first-place in the hurdles, long jump and high jump. Nash is tied for the No. 1 spot in the hurdles, No. 4 in the high jump and No. 7 in the long jump.

Geena Bumgardner took first in the 800 meter with a No. 3 top-10 time while teammate Megan Past placed third in a competitive 1,600-meter run with a No. 4 top-10 finish. Emily Beekman posted double wins in both the shot and discus. Other individuals placing for the seventh-grade team were Lauren Snead in the hurdles and a No. 5 top-10 finish for Marika Loudenback in the shot and long jump, Abbie Grimstead in the discus, Kasea Harbuchek in the 400 and Alex Rudd in the 800-meter run.

With just six eighth-grade girls eligible, the newcomers to middle-school track put on an outstanding performance in their individual events placing in seven of the 10 events. Taking first in the discus was Leah Wiley as well as a No. 10 top-10 finish. She also placed third in long jump. Placing second in the 800 was Danielle Crabtree with a No. 3 top-10 placing and a third place in high jump. Christina Carlson threw to a first-place finish in the shot while teammate Shelby Westerlund posted a secondplace finish in the high jump and third in the hurdles. Kristina Johnson took second in the discus.


Eagles have strong day against Chief Kanim

The sixth and seventh-grade Snoqualmie Middle School Eagle track teams were triumphant over the Chief Kanim Hawks last week. The seventh-grade team was led by Summer Nash who placed first in the hurdles, long jump and high jump. Nash anchored the winning 800-meter relay team of Ali Van Bryce, Geena Bumgardner and Marika Loudenback. Van Bryce also took a first in the 100, while Bumgardner captured a second in the 800-meter run. Other second-place finishers for the team were Lauren Snead in the hurdles, Anna Wheeler in the 400 meter and Shelagh MacCauley in both the 200 meter and high jump. Megan Past placed second in the 1,600 meter in a very close race and ended up earning a school record time of 6:00.0 for the seventh-grade girls. Past also finished third in the 800 meter with teammates Alex Rudd, Emily Beekman, Marika Loudenback and Alyssa Melin. Establishing a school record relay time in the medley for the first time ever was the team of Snead, Kyla Lindberg, Van Bryce and Bumgardner .

The sixth-grade Eagles took nine of the 13 first-place finishes over the Chief Kanim Hawks. Leading the way to victory was Rachel Finnegan with double wins in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, Tori Howell in the shot put and discus, and Dannah Parsons in the 800 and 1,600 meter. Hailey Conway also placed first in the 400 meter. Picking up seconds for the team were Isabella Radar in the hurdles, Jessica Hargett in the 100, Wendy Carter in the 200 meter, Alexis Pearlstein in the long jump and Hailey Eddings in the high jump. Assisting with thirds were Pearlstein in hurdles, Radar in the 200 meter, Brianna Beckes in the long jump and Andrea Volken in the hurdles. The medley relay also took first with the team of Jacklyn Wallace, Pearlstein, Carter and Nicole Hunt as did the 800-meter relay team of Hargett, Beckes, Conway and Finnegan.

The eighth-grade girls team once again made a fine showing. Individual placers were Leah Wiley taking second in the shot put, discus and long jump. Teammate Shelby Westerlund took second in hurdles while Danielle Crabtree ran to second in the 800-meter run. Brittney Conway took third in the 200 and 400-meter dashes to aid the effort with Crabtree and Westerlund also pulling thirds in their respective events. Rounding out the winning 400-meter relay team was Conway, Christina Carlson, Kristina Johnson and Shelby Westerlund. Winning the 800-meter relay was the team of Wiley, Crabtree, Johnson and Westerlund.
