Things are falling into place for Austin Jenckes, a singer-songwriter who grew up in the Valley. He has just returned to his Nashville home after his final appearance on NBC’s “The Voice,” and two whirlwind performance tours that started immediately after the show. He’s marrying his longtime friend and girlfriend, Brittany Townsend, this August, and is working on his next album, scheduled to come out this fall. And this week, he accomplished what he moved to Nashville to do, become a professional musician.

“This week, I’m signing my first publishing deal,” Jenckes said in a telephone interview. “That basically means I’ll be paid to write songs, and that includes my songs for myself, and for other people.”

The Lady Chablis
Is Fall City ready for drag queens? Divas...
By Carol Ladwig • April 15, 2014 7:31 pm

From the neck down, the look was casual, sweats in fact. On top, though, it was all glam and sparkles, with long false eyelashes and a foot-high blonde wig. The martini-swirling phenomenon underneath it all was making the look work, while simultaneously working the Fall City Bistro on a Sunday evening in February.

“Good morning!” Akasha Manila greeted the guests trickling in for dinner, “good to see you! I just woke up!”

Manila’s sleepy claim fit perfectly with the “Divas” theme of the night’s show. It probably wasn’t true though, because this particular diva, like his fellow performers, was already made-up for her appearance in the semimonthly “Night Queens” drag show at the bistro, and doing makeup takes a while.

North Bend’s busy sewer plant nears limits
North Bend’s busy sewer plant nears limits
By Carol Ladwig • April 9, 2014 4:04 pm

North Bend is growing, with the potential for 655 new homes in the next few years, based on building project applications in progress at the city’s planning department. However, its aging sewer system may not be up to future demands.

The city’s 60-year-old wastewater treatment plant is permitted by the Environmental Protection Agency to handle 2.58 million gallons of wastewater per day, but because of a “pinch point” in the system, “the functional limit is 1 million gallons,” City Administrator Londi Lindell told the Record, recapping the information from a March 25 council work session on the issue.

Movie-goers can spot several Valley landmarks in the trailer for “Lucky Them,” and soon, in the movie itself. The independent film, starring Toni Collette as a rock journalist tracking down a rock star who disappeared from the music scene, is scheduled to be released May 30, according to the Internet Movie Database, although other sources project an April 21 limited release.

“Lucky Them” was filmed in several Seattle locations, and on Snoqualmie and Carnation streets, inside a Carnation home, and both in and outside of the Mount Si Pub in North Bend, in February 2013.

Things took on a grand scale at the Snoqualmie Valley Schools Foundation luncheon March 20, starting with the full house. More than 230 participants attended the annual fundraiser at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge, helping to raise nearly $100,000 for area schools this year alone. The days donations also put the foundation itself over the million dollar mark in total fundraising over its 25 years.

Si View Park and Community Center was our readers’ choice for the Best Park in the Valley. The 75 year-old facility is a hub for many community events, including this year’s Best Festival, the Festival at Mount Si, or Alpine Days, if you prefer, so we asked Si View’s Minna Rudd, and Festival organizer Jill Masssengill about what makes them special.

Best community volunteers chosen by Valley Record readers
By Carol Ladwig • March 26, 2014 7:02 pm

The question of why never comes up in conversations with the Valley’s top volunteers. The reasons they work so hard, on Relay for Life, on Fall City Days, on the Festival at Mount Si and on preserving local organizations and activities, is simple, obvious even: It’s what you do when you live in a community.

They call it a prom, but drop your preconceptions about high school, limos, and dresses, because this prom is for everyone. No need for dresses, or even dates for that matter, say organizers Patti Inge and Pastor Stephen Haddan

“Just make sure you come,” said Inge.

Two recent events confirmed the value of Eastside Fire & Rescue to North Bend. One was an initial agreement by most of the partners to pay a larger share of the costs in order to preserve the service. The other was a long-awaited fire protection rating improvement that will lower premiums in April. Deputy Fire Chief Bud Backer told North Bend’s City Council about the change Jan. 7, predicting the new rating would lower insurance costs for city residents as well as many in the surrounding area. North Bend’s rating changed from a 5 to a 4.

Carnation’s new police officer is back. Scott Allen, who got his first job in law enforcement 17 years ago with Carnation’s police department, is once again patrolling the city, this time as both a King County Sheriff’s Deputy and Carnation’s dedicated full-time cop.

“For the last two years or so, I’ve been wanting to get back to patrol,” Allen said, “I’ve been wanting to get back out here to familiar territory, because I know all the people who work out here.”

Raven TV at Twin Falls Middle School is pretty cool, but the President of the United States is not likely to sit down and watch an episode. The guy just doesn’t have time to watch a lot of TV. On Friday, Feb. 28, though, he freed up an afternoon, to watch a different Twin Falls production.
