Eight years ago, Nancy Baker lost her mother to Alzheimer’s. But even before her mother’s death, Baker already knew what the obituary was going to say.
Friends and family saw the care and thought she put into writing her mother’s obituary and her father’s obituary a few years later — and soon she was asked to write more.
“I became known within my circle of family and friends as the obituary writer,” Baker said.
Originally writing obituaries for people within her circle, Baker decided to turn her passion for storytelling and honoring legacies into a business. In fall of 2024, Obituary Scribe was launched. In addition to providing obituaries for individuals and pets, Obituary Scribe can create a social media post announcing the death and funeral date, along with eulogies and liturgical wording.
PattyJo Bodman took advantage of Obituary Scribes services for her father’s funeral in the fall. Nancy Baker wrote the programs, social media images and prayers for the funeral.
“Life can change so quickly,” Bodman said. “Nancy helped us through a difficult time. Beautiful soul.”
To begin the process, clients can fill out a form, answering simple questions about their loved one’s favorite band, color and what they believe their legacy should be. After filling out the form, Baker will connect with them virtually, so they can hear their loved one’s story.
“There’s only so many casseroles you can cram into the refrigerator, and flowers wilt,” Baker said. “So this is a way that I can tangibly support people during their grief.”
Prices range depending on what the individual wants, but eulogies and obituaries cost $250, while a death notice and social media announcement costs $50. However, Baker is willing to work within a family’s budget. To learn more, visit https://obituaryscribe.com/price-list or email nancy@obituaryscribe.com.
