Energy poured into the streets April 5 as Fall City’s only ice cream shop had its grand opening.
Mooo! Ice Cream Shop had a ribbon cutting with the Carnation Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, shortly before officially opening its doors to the town. The shop is owned by longtime Fall City residents Sharon and Larry Brown and staffed by some of their five kids and 14 grandkids.
Larry Brown is also known as the town lawyer, having founded Brown & Sterling in the early 2000s. As he transitions into retirement, he decided it was the perfect time to lean into a lifelong passion of his: ice cream.
The shop is serving up Olympic Mountain ice cream, a family-owned brand out of the Skokomish Valley that is used at several local restaurants. Mooo! has 16 flavors total, six of which are permanent, while the others will rotate, and there will always be at least two dairy-free options.
So far, Olympic Mountain has crafted two custom flavors for the shop — one that has toasted coconut, almonds and pecans, and another that uses espresso from local Aroma Coffee Co.
On the shop’s website, moooicecream.com, customers can also vote for their favorite flavors to help Brown and his team decide what to sell.
“Part of our mission is to enhance and promote families and community,” he said, “so we want to get them involved in what we’re doing.”
Along with being a family man, Brown is a community man. He was president of the board of directors for the youth nonprofit Encompass NW for two years, and five cents out of every sales dollar Mooo! receives will go to Snoqualmie Valley charities that serve children and youth.
But ice-cream-loving Brown and his family thought the children of Fall City were missing an ice cream shop — so they opened one.
At the grand opening, kids and adults alike celebrated in branded T-shirts reading “Can yooo say mooo!?” Brown said his nephew is the general manager and five of his grandkids are working at the shop, as well as some of their friends.
“Given that I’ve got so many grandkids, I think I’ve got staffing pretty well lined up for the next 10 years,” he said.
Brown’s son Brian Neuenschwander was also involved, leading construction on the shop as owner of NeuLeaf Remodel. Brown said the interior design was done by a designer from Bargreen Ellingson, who took the idea of a classic ice cream shop and ran with it.
The black and white cow-spotted exterior was all Brown’s idea, however, as was the widespread cow theme. The roof is adorned with a life-size cow statue, which Brown said will be decorated for the holidays. During the grand opening, he also had a mini from Kataluna Horse Rescue outside of the shop for people to take photos with.
Brown also chose the name of the shop.
“We were originally going to call the shop Fall City Scoop, and then I woke up one night to this idea of Mooo! and just started chuckling,” he said. “We can have so much fun with this.”
