On Monday nights, Carnation Golf Course’s front nine turns into its “Ca-nine.”

Through Labor Day, the course opens its front nine stretch for customers with dogs, turning into an off-leash park from 5:30 p.m. to dusk during ‘Yappy Hour.’

Staff at the course’s KAT’s Grill open a taco bar with beer and wine specials, allowing patrols to stroll the grounds with eats and a local microbrew, watching their dog explore a par-5 fairway.

The course is surrounded by the Snoqualmie River on three sides, and include 150 acres of parkland, marshes, ponds and meadows.

“It’s doggie heaven,” said course owner Chad Tachell. “For years, our customers have been asking to bring their dogs out, and this year we decided to let ‘em do it.”

Standard off-leashe rules apply during Yappy Hour.

“Our experience with responsible dog owners is that they know the drill – they pick up after their dogs, they keep the scene friendly and calm,” Tachell said. “We’ll give them green fixers if they nick up the greens at all.”

The course has been owned and managed by the Tachell Family for more than 40 years. Tachell said the course embraces its rustic tradition.

“We’ve got bald eagles, blue herons, an early morning black bear family and even three elk last week,” he said. But, life at the Carnation course is not always bucolic bliss. Like other Snoqualmie Valley courses, Carnation has been hit with floods in four of the last five years.

“We’ve had to come to terms with our river neighbor,” Tachell said. “Sometimes it wears you down. But then you look around and you realize how beautiful the property is and how lucky we are to be here.

“Yappy Hour is just another way to share the property and brings folks out – whether they know a 5-iron from a pitching wedge,” Tachell said. “Now, if we could just get the sun to shine!”]
