I was appalled at what seemed like mindless responses to the March 24 question of the week, which was “Would you like to see a big box store in the Valley?”
I’ll give credit to one respondent who implied that it might increase the tax base for our schools… that is, until it runs our small businesses out of town.
Another said that she thought “we needed it.” Like we really need a giant warehouse of Chinese-made crap right in the middle of our town. A third said that she’d love it, because it was inconvenient for her to drive “all the way to Issaquah.” I’m sorry, but if you want to live next to a big box retailer, move to Covington.
Thank you to Denise Stringfellow, the lone sane voice in the crowd who actually understands the value of small communities and small businesses. There are many reasons why people decide to live in the Snoqualmie Valley — the beauty, the recreation, the family values. But a value-eroding traffic magnet is not one of them!
