Past years have celebrated the city’s leafy downtown tree corridor and ways that the community comes together in difficult situations.
Now, Fall City Days is going green.
The 2010 Fall City Days theme is “A Brighter Shade of Green,” and uses recycling-themed artwork and a design by artist Margot Schuller to get its environment-friendly point across.
“It can be taken two ways,” said Fall City Days committee member Judy Dix.
First, the theme reflects on the green, growing nature of the community. Fall City is known for its family farms, and farmers get involved during Fall City Days. For example, Rob and Deb Arenth, owners of Fall City Farms, will judge the town parade. The town includes several community parks, and formed its own metropolitan parks district in 2009.
The flip side of the green topic, Dix said, is connected with being good stewards.
Fall City boasts Boy Scouts who run recycling programs and clean up after the festival. Expect to see other examples of how Fall City residents, young and old, care for the environment in the Fall City Parade, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with a kiddie parade.
The T-shirt design was created by Margot Schuller during the Fall City Community Association logo contest, held several years ago.
Fall City Days is a fundraiser for the community. Proceeds from T-shirt sales and Ducky Derby tickets are given back to deserving causes in the community, with a big focus on schools.
Last year, the festival provided more than $11,000 for programs and scholarships at Fall City Elementary School, Chief Kanim Middle School and Mount Si High School.
“We only keep enough carry-over to fund the next year’s event,” Dix said.
