Nina Horn, an eighth-grade student at Twin Falls Middle School in North Bend, recently spent a week at the State Capitol, working as a page for the Washington State Senate. She was one of 27 students who served as Senate pages for the seventh week of the 2017 legislative session.

Horn was sponsored by Hunter Goodman, the Secretary of the Washington State Senate.

“It was fantastic that Nina was able to come page for us this week,” Goodman said. “I am glad she’s interested in the function of the legislature.”

The Senate page program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock legislative session.

“It sounded like a great opportunity for me to get some experience with state government,” Horn said of why she applied to the program. “I’ve been able to learn more about the day-to-day details than I could learn in school.”

She is the daughter of Ann Lee and Douglas Horn of North Bend.
