North Bend shakes off the rain for weekend’s Festival at Mount Si

Despite the cloudy skies and occasional rain, North Bend’s annual Festival at Mount Si brought together the community for another year of contests, competitions, live music, games, and performances.

The festival began Friday night with the opening of the beer garden and two stages of music and entertainment. Although many of the Twin Peaks-themed events were canceled due to copyright issues, the cherry-stem tying contest Friday and Tibetan rock throw on Sunday went on as scheduled.

Saturday morning began with a parade down North Bend Way celebrating various community organizations as well as event sponsors which helped make the festival a reality. Community mainstay Pat Cokewell was honored as the Grand Marshall of the parade for her 49 years of history in North Bend which included running the Mar-T Cafe for more than 20 years, and helping organize the past North Bend festival Alpine Days.

The rest of the day featured live music, games, and contests at Si View Park. The community stage featured a blueberry dessert contest and cherry pie eating contest. The stage also had performances from the Sno-Valley Winds, Veils of the Nile Belly Dance Company, Cascade Dance Academy, and Mount Si Karate.

Sunday began with the 16th annual chili cook off, where teams got to work early chopping, grilling and taunting each other. The Amazing Pets Contest, despite a rain delay, had an excellent turnout, with strong competition in both the Best Costume and Best Trick categories. The sun came out in time for the now-traditional wife-carrying contest, followed by the all new sibling carrying contest. Chris and Jamie Teteak repeated as champions in the adults’ event, cousins Will Scott and Jackson Shankles won Jackson’s weight in root beer in the under-21 division.
