Salute the colors at the 2011 Carnation Fourth of July parade, themed “It’s a Grand Old Flag”
The parade gets started with the traditional children’s parade, at 10:30 a.m. down Tolt Avenue. All children are welcome, and are asked to meet with decorated bikes and wagons, or just their smiling selves, across from QFC for the start of the parade. Children march in opposite direction of the main parade, bikes up front so they don’t bump into anybody.
Two days of events and entertainment at Carnation’s Fourth of July celebration include live theater, music, and a benefit dinner on Sunday, July 3, and a fun run, parade, shortcake feast, 3-on-3 tourney, car show and plenty more on the Fourth.
The North Bend Farmer’s Market is open for business 4 to 8 p.m. every Thursday this summer through September 1 at Si View Park.
The open-air market returns with a wide selection of fresh produce and foods, flowers, arts and crafts.
It’s all in the attitude. Rain and cool weather may have dampened the 2011 Fall City Days celebration a bit, but it also meant shorter lines at the food stands—a little shorter, anyway—more seating near the stage, and more watermelon for everyone.
The North Bend business community, volunteers and city staff are planning for the third annual Downtown Block Party, set for Saturday, July 23, 1 to 10 p.m. A full lineup of entertainment, music, food and activities are planned.

Although the wet spring season may have led many to believe that the area doesn’t need a burn moratorium this year, Eastside Fire & Rescue expects warmer days, and started a season burn ban as a precaution.
EFR began its annual burning moratorium on Wednesday, June 15. This moratorium does not apply to propane, natural gas or charcoal fires, but does apply to other recreational and cooking fires, such as campfires.
The ongoing Jazz Art show at Boxley’s in North Bend shows music-themed works painted by Valley artists. Locals including Sandy Robinson, Gloria Danielson, Alraune Chowdhury, Ranita Chowdhury, Tami Donnelley, Camille Bodet, Julie Hicks, Marcia Tuttle Ryon, Sally Rackets, Danny Raphael, Shannon Lewis, and Richard W. Burhans contributed art that is for sale.
Valley Center Stage and Boxley’s host an evening of dastardly deeds and comic crime as they present “Critical Review” an interactive murder mystery, Thursday, June 23 and Friday, June 24.
Dinner guests will mingle among the suspects and other characters of the play as they unveil their motives and witness a murder and help solve the crime by the end of the night.

Blessed enough anecdotes, jokes and stories to keep the clerks at Farmhouse Market and any old friends he meets entertained, the 88-year-old Fall City resident isn’t shy about telling tales.
As the oldest living resident born in Fall City, he happens to have plenty.
“Well, when I say born, I was actually born in the old Weyerhaeuser hospital. But I feel I qualify because I spent my first nine months here,” he said.
Two Rivers’ courtyard felt more like a family room than a school facility last Wednesday evening , June 8. There were lots of people, lots of conversations, a bunch of cameras snapping away, and a baby’s high-pitched giggles punctuated most of the talk. Mainly, though, there was an overwhelming sense of pride shared by all who came to see the Two Rivers Class of 2011 receive their high school diplomas.
It’s official. Summer has begun early with a weekend of fun for four full decades in Fall City.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Fall City Days, a celebration that traces its roots back to old-time logging exhibitions, firefighter contests and soap-box derbies.
The milestone this year is marked by some new events, some old. Favorites that are back include the rubber Duck Derby, watermelon-eating competition, Fall City Fun Run and lots of artistic performances.
Happening right before the main parade, children are welcome to bring their animal—just about any animal—to show off in a kids and pet parade.
Dogs aren’t the only beasts welcomed: “It could be a llama, a goat, a cow on a leash,” said volunteer Laurie Hauglie.
The annual Fall City Days watermelon contest is all about community involvement and having a big, red, juicy good time in the bargain.
The watermelon-eating competition happens rain or shine at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at at Olive Taylor Quigley Park. The contest is free to participate.
