Power to the people at Carnation Fourth auto show

Flashy chrome, candy paint and revving engines are making their way to the streets of Carnation. So it’s only appropriate that Carnation’s John Petree, owner of L.J. Toy Auto Repair, is taking charge of the annual Fourth of July Hot Rods and Harleys show.

Flashy chrome, candy paint and revving engines are making their way to the streets of Carnation. So it’s only appropriate that Carnation’s John Petree, owner of L.J. Toy Auto Repair, is taking charge of the annual Fourth of July Hot Rods and Harleys show.

Boasting three decades of expertise in the auto world, Petree is organizing the show, which starts at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Bank of America parking lot, 4760 Tolt. Ave.

Petree, also a Carnation Chamber of Commerce member, gears up this year’s show not only for car lovers but for both young and old festival-goers.

This year, the people will judge the cars. Entrants get a ballot to vote their top car picks for each category.

“What better person to judge themselves and their peers than another fellow competitor?” Petree said. “Judging will also be done by the general public, which means a kid or some guy my age that’s what matters. They see cars on the road just as much as any of us.”

Winners will receive trophies and bragging rights in a number of categories. A raffle is also planned.

Entering his own car creation, Petree has turned a Toyota Four-Runner into a personal snow remover by attaching a snow plow, a product he offers at his shop.

“No more of this ‘getting trapped,’” he said.

Petree has brought in a Snap-On representative in with a truckload of discounted tools, who will be donating a number of bike and car tool bags.

“What better place to do that than at an automotive display,” Petree said.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. Judging will be from noon to 2 p.m., with trophies given out at 3 p.m. Raffles are planned throughout the day and the cost to take part is $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
