• Training a firefighter is more complex than merely setting a fire and extinguishing it. The new state fire training center being built east of North Bend reflects that complexity. The small valley adjacent to Grouse Ridge is filled with roads, buildings, graveled pads and ponds to be used as a central training area for all of the state’s firefighters.

• The North Bend City Council has given its authorization for the city to settle an ongoing court case with Watt and Jane Glazier and Glazier’s, Inc. North Bend lost a court case in July 1982 over obtaining a parking strip from the Glaziers for use by the city. The litigation cost the city about $72,000, so a portion of the court decision was appealed.

• The new Carnation Senior Citizen Center will be open for public inspection on Sunday, a day designated for an open house, with use of the facilities beginning the following Wednesday. Everyone is invited.

• Amazing, isn’t it, how much young talent there is in the Valley? The Valley Men’s Club in Carnation lined up 13 acts for its talent show and Sallal Grange has over 25 separate acts for theirs. No duplicates, either, because both shows are set for the same night, this Friday.

March 22, 1934

• Marvin Brooks, 50, a CWA worker living in Seattle, was fatally injured Monday when a section of the unfinished bridge on which he was working on near Cedar Falls collapsed, plunging him and a fellow worker, George Peterson, into the river. Brooks struck his head on a part of the bridge as he was hurled into the river. He was rescued but died soon after of a fractured skull.

• Tabulation of scores of the teams playing in the King County high school basketball tournament at Kirkland showed Roy Spjut of Fall City was leading scorer, totalling 43 points in four games.
