The Letters about Literature competition, sponsored by the Washington State Library, has begun accepting entries. This contest challenges students to write about one of their favorite books, or one of the most influential books they’ve read. For the competition, students are asked to write a letter to the author and explain how their chosen book changed their perspective and taught them something about the world or themselves.
The contest is open to students from fourth through twelfth grade. The letters are categorized by age group: Level one, grades four through six; Level two, grades seven and eight; Level three, all high school students.
The winning letter from each state is entered into the national competition.
Winners will be announced in April. Winners for each level are awarded a cash prize and will advance to the national competition.
Entires for level three must be mailed by Dec. 4. For levels one and two, letters must be mailed by Jan. 11.
Entry coupons must be attached to each letter. Coupons and contest guidelines are available at www.sos.wa.gov/library/lal/Letters-About-Literature-2016.aspx.
