Everything gets mixed together in the Cascade Community Theatre’s upcoming production. Girls are taken for boys, identities are mistaken, twins are separated and reunited, and adults and youth alike combine for a funny, and fun-filled adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Twelth Night.”

The show, premiering Tuesday, July 3, in Carnation’s Tolt Commons Park, has become an annual tradition and creative opportunity for the six year-old troupe.

“Every summer we do Shakespeare,” said show director and co-writer Davin Henrikson. “It’s a way for us to have some fun writing stuff, too.”

CCT members typically write the Shakespeare shows themselves, which saves on royalty costs, but also allows the company to create a custom show with actor input, local references and an appeal entirely its own.

“We modernize it, condense some of the longer speeches, and throw in a lot of funny stuff,” said Henrikson. “It’s family-friendly, there’s no swearing or weird stuff. Kids love it, they really get a kick out of it.”

Another huge benefit, Henrikson said, is “very purposefully, we make it low-tech, and low-cost.”

Every showing of “Twelfth Night” is free to the public, but the group does ask for donations, to cover the costs of presenting the show every weekend in July.

“Summer’s really tough for keeping a troupe of actors together who aren’t paid,” Henrikson explained, so the company decided to condense the schedule—the summer show has previously sprawled over two months—and double-cast many of the roles, to ensure they will always have a Viola and Orsino.

Henrikson is also pleased that the cast includes “six or seven high school students, and we have two middle school students,” because CCT’s roots are in children’s drama. The group formed eight years ago to offer drama training in the middle school and elementary schools of Riverview School District. The adult troupe formed two years later, and the programs  have enjoyed tremendous growth.
