Be a volunteer and enhance public lands at Little Si in North Bend at next week’s day of trail repair and maintenance.

National Public Lands Day in the Greenway is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. Volunteers may register for a full day shift by visiting www.mtsgreenway.org.

The event helps highlight the Washington State Department of Natural Resources’ commitment to preserving the lands it manages in the Mountains to Sound Greenway.

“Little Si is a popular place for people who want to hike to beautiful views in under two miles,” said Cynthia Welti, Executive Director for the Greenway Trust. “Celebrating National Public Lands Day by giving back to this area raises awareness of the importance of keeping these trails safe and usable so that people can continue to enjoy them.”

Little Si is the small peak southwest of Mount Si. This is a relatively new trail built in 1985 that was all built by muscle, no machines. Little Si is not only a popular destination for hikers but for rock climbers as well. It offers great views of North Bend and the surrounding peaks. Due to the high numbers of hikers that use this trail annually, attention is needed to maintain this trail. Over the past three years, volunteers have contributed over 5,000 hours in bringing this trail up to more sustainable standards, including building rock turnpikes and steps, repairing drainage, and replacing signs.

On National Public Lands Day, volunteers at Little Si will work together to help repair overused trails by resurfacing, brushing, and fixing drainage issues. Volunteers help keep the trails in good shape so people can continue to come back each year to enjoy the mountain’s beauty. The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust will provide tools and project supplies. No experience is required. Participants must wear long pants, work/hiking boots, and bring a lunch and water. Volunteers must be fourteen years or older to participate. Registration is required.
