Navigating the evolving Auto Insurance landscape

Fall City Agency focuses on client education and community resilience

Founded by Kevin and Laurie Hauglie, the Kevin Hauglie Agency has expanded from a local business to a well-respected name in the Insurance industry.

“Our mission is to educate, protect and build community resilience,” says Angela Donaldson, CFM and Head of Insurance Operations. “Our goal is for clients to understand what they’re buying. Families can be significantly impacted by insurance claims and its much easier when you know you’re protected.”

2025 outlook on the auto insurance industry

The auto insurance sector in Washington state is undergoing notable changes. The past few years have been challenging for families and seniors due to factors such as a ban on credit-based scoring, increased claim frequency and supply chain issues. However, Donaldson is optimistic for 2025, anticipating a leveling out of price increases and greater transparency from insurers.

“We have seen double-digit increases in the last 18 months,” Donaldson says. “Instead of 20 per cent rate increases, we hope for six to 10 per cent, which is a huge improvement.”

Another notable development in the industry is the rise of telematics, which tracks driving behavior to determine insurance costs based on individual habits. While some may view this as intrusive, Donaldson sees its potential for promoting fairness.

“Basing rates on telematics means communities will see their car usage reflected in their insurance rates rather than relying on credit scores,” she says.

The value of consulting your insurance agent

Donaldson emphasizes the importance of regular consultations with insurance agents to ensure policies align with clients’ needs and financial goals. She suggests meeting with an agent every other year or whenever significant life changes occur.

A thorough policy review should include:

  • Sharing goals and priorities
  • Conducting a needs analysis to uncover potential coverage gaps
  • Reviewing policies to avoid over- or under-insurance
  • Assessing risks to the home
  • Identifying cost-saving opportunities

“Your insurance agent is your partner in protection,” she says. “Together, you can craft a plan that provides the security you need while navigating a changing insurance industry.”

5 ways to stay safe this winter

1. Check your tires: Keep them inflated with proper tread for wet and icy roads.

2. Drive cautiously: Slow down, increase following distance and use headlights for better visibility.

3. Maintain control: Accelerate, brake and steer smoothly to maintain control on slippery surfaces.

4. Be prepared: Stock your car with essentials like a first-aid kit, snacks, water, tire chains and a phone charger.

5. Protect pipes: Disconnect hoses, cover outdoor faucets and open under-sink cabinets to prevent freezing.

By following these precautions, clients can mitigate risks associated with winter weather, aligning with the agency’s commitment to building a more resilient community.
