Wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense across Washington. Taking proactive steps to safeguard your home and family can significantly reduce the risk to your property. The Kevin Hauglie Farmers Insurance Agency is helping local homeowners do just that – with a focus on prevention, preparation and personalized coverage.
“Many people think of insurance as a backup plan, but when it comes to wildfires, the best defense starts with prevention,” says Angela Donaldson with the Agency.
Wildfire season checklist:
Donaldson shares 9 tasks that every homeowner should complete before wildfire season:
- Clean gutters and roofs: Remove dry leaves, pine needles and debris that can catch embers.
- Clear defensible space: Create at least 30 feet of open space around your home by trimming vegetation and removing flammable materials.
- Trim tree branches: Limb trees to at least 16 feet off the ground to slow fire spread and allow emergency vehicles to pass safely.
- Mow grass short and keep it watered: Dry grass can ignite easily and spread flames quickly.
- Remove dead vegetation and wood piles: Keep firewood and combustibles at least 30 feet away from any structures.
- Replace flammable landscaping: Use fire-resistant plants such as lavender, rockrose or low-growing ground covers instead of ornamental grasses or evergreens near your home.
- Install ember-resistant vents and screens: Prevent embers from entering attics or crawl spaces.
- Label your property clearly: Ensure your address is visible for first responders, even in smoky or low-visibility conditions.
- Review your evacuation plan: Identify two routes out, prepare an emergency kit and discuss plans with your family.
Need help getting started?
The King Conservation District’s Wildfire Mitigation Program offers free wildfire risk assessments for King County residents. Participants receive expert advice on defensible space, home hardening and even financial assistance to implement recommended improvements. Learn more at kingcd.org/programs
“A cost-share option is available for residents who complete a wildfire risk assessment through the program,” Donaldson adds. “It’s a great way to not only reduce the risk of wildfire damage but also potentially lower your insurance costs.”
Don’t forget to review your insurance coverage
While taking preventive action is essential, the right insurance coverage helps ensure you’re financially protected if disaster strikes.
“Make sure your policy reflects current rebuilding costs, and don’t forget about coverage for upgrades or outbuildings,” Donaldson says. “We also recommend creating a digital inventory of your belongings, to help simplify the claims process.”
