A look at 2021 spending so far in Snoqualmie

The City of Snoqualmie spent just over $8 million in the first three months of 2021.

This is according to the city’s first quarter financial report, which details the city’s spending and revenue between Jan 1. and March 31, 2021.

During the first quarter of 2021, the city brought in about $9.6 million in revenue, meaning the city ran a surplus during the first quarter. The city is projected to run a budget deficit during its biennial 2021-2022 budget. The city is expecting to spend $99 million while only bringing in $93 million, according to its first quarter budget.

The city’s biggest expenditure so far in 2021 was on the police, spending $1,031,910 from its general fund.

Other big costs for the city include $934,733 for administrative departments and $824,234 for fire and emergency management. The city also spent more than $600,000 on capital improvements for water and sewer systems and about $437,000 on community development.

Some of the city’s smaller expenses include $2,014 for fire equipment, $8,710 for drug enforcement, and $755 for environmental sustainability. All these expenses used special funds.

The city said it expects to pull money from its Financial Stabilization Reserves in order to balance this year’s budget.

The deficit is partially due to economic hardship faced by Snoqualmie businesses during the pandemic, and an increase in online purchases, which impacts the amount the city receives in sales tax. The city said COVID has impacted all forms of city revenue, with the exception of property taxes.

Mayor Matt Larson also attributed the inability to follow through on the Salish Lodge Expansion project as a big hit to city revenue.
