Washington’s first-ever top two primary saw Valley residents cast their tallies in a likely preview of the general election.

In the Aug. 19 primary election, the two candidates with the highest number of votes advance to the November election.

In fifth district legislative races, Republican incumbent Cheryl Pflug received 58 percent of the vote, with 11,323 votes, while Democrat Phyllis Huster received 8,167 votes, or 41 percent.

Incumbent position 1 State Rep. Jay Rodne received 10,989 votes, or about 58 percent, over Democratic challenger Jon Viebrock, who received 7,795 votes, or 41 percent.

Democrat challenger David Spring got a little closer to his opponent, Republican position 2 incumbent State Rep. Glenn Anderson, who received 9,490 votes, or 50.74 percent. Spring got 9,199 votes, or 49.18 percent.

In eighth district congressional races, Republican Dave Reichert led with 46.9 percent, or 37,855 votes, to Democrat Darcy Burner, who received 37,498 votes, or 46.4 percent. Valley resident Richard Todd, who ran as an independent, received 1,049 votes, or 1.3 percent.

Nonpartisan office Initiative 26 received a 64 percent “yes” vote to go on the general election ballot.
